Workshop 1 - Implicit social cognition
Bertram Gawronski, The University of Western Ontario, Canada
Rainer Banse, University of Bonn, Germany
Social behavior is often influenced by automatic or implicit processes that occur without intention or outside of conscious awareness. The goal of the seminar is to provide an overview of theories, methods, and empirical findings in the area of implicit social cognition. The course will address (a) theoretical underpinnings of implicit social cognition, (b) methods and measurement procedures employed in implicit social cognition research, and (c) current findings regarding introspection, consciousness, and consistency of implicit representations; formation, change, and contextualization of implicit representations; and effects of implicit representations on information processing, decision making, and behavior.
