Workshop 5 - The emotional side of intergroup relations
Nyla Branscombe, Kansas University
Tilemachos Iatridis, University of Crete
Kate Reynolds, Australian National University
In this course we will consider the antecedents of various collective emotions and examine their multifaceted role in shaping intergroup behavior. This is a broad theme that cuts across a range of issues including what emotions are most likely to be experienced by high and low status groups, how history and the current social context shapes collective emotional experience, the impact of both positive and negative emotions on intergroup responses, and how collective emotions can intensify intergroup conflict and violence or enhance intergroup reconciliation and forgiveness. We will examine a number of theoretical perspectives on collective emotions and strive for an integrative understanding of the role that emotion plays in intergroup relations. The existing empirical research addressing emotions stemming from group membership will be examined as a means of identifying unanswered questions and generating novel ways of scientifically investigating them.
